Offisite DB Connection Failure
Server 2003 Web Edition SP1
SQL Server Express 2005
I am writing in the following:
Visual Basic 2005 Pro Edition
I have read where you can setup Express to allow TCP/IP connection, and I have done what it stated HERE (http://www.datamasker.com/SSE2005_NetworkCfg.htm). However, I am still not able to connect to the DB on the remote server.
I go to:
Tools --> Connect to Server --> Type IP and get the connection failed to connec to server "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
I even tried:
Tools --> Connect to Server --> Type IP\SQLEXPRESS and get the connection failed to connec to server "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
Has anyone been able to do this, or am I wasting my time? If I can get the SQL Server to do as requested then I am going to purchase and work with it, however, I want to test out before I spend the $$$$$ to begin the full project. If anyone can be of assistance here I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.Can you access the server on a remote machine on the same location as the server is (that is, in the same domain, at least without going through a firewall) ? It might have something to do with TCP/IP port 1433 that is not opened in the firewall ... and believe me, you don't want that !!!
Is your SQL server directly accessible from the Internet with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ? Or should some routing be done because it's behind a firewall ? I would check your network admin for some assistence ...

Yveausql

Odd null behavior
Here is an example
set ANSI_NULLS on
go
create table #t1
(
ID int,
DateField datetime
)
create table #t2
(
ID int,
DateField datetime
)
insert into #t1 (ID, DateField) values (1, '7/20/2006')
insert into #t2 (ID, DateFIeld) values (1, null)
select * from #t1 join #t2 on #t1.ID = #t2.ID where #t1.DateField <> #t2.DateField
drop table #t1
drop table #t2
The select should return a record because NULL does not equal '7/20/2006' but it doesn't.
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance.
straight out of BOL:
"Comparisons between two null values, or between a NULL and any other value, return unknown because the value of each NULL is unknown."
use the IS NULL clause to assist.
HTH,
Derek
|||Then why does this return a record?:set ANSI_NULLS off
go
declare @.var datetime
select @.var = null
create table #t1
(
ID int,
DateField datetime
)
insert into #t1 (ID, DateField) values (1, '7/20/2006')
select * from #t1 where #t1.DateField <> @.var
drop table #t1|||
ANSI NULLS setting only affects comparisons of the form:
column <Operator> @.value
column <Operator> literal
value <Operator> @.value
value <Operator> literal
and combinations thereof. The column to column comparison will always follow the ANSI semantics for NULL value comparison. So you could write your SELECT like:
-- Depends on whether you have datetime values with the default value or not
select * from #t1 join #t2 on #t1.ID = #t2.ID
where #t1.DateField <> coalesce(#t2.DateField, '')
--or
select * from #t1 join #t2 on #t1.ID = #t2.ID
where #t1.DateField <> #t2.DateField
or (#t1.DateField IS NULL and #t2.DateField IS NOT NULL)
or (#t1.DateField IS NOT NULL and #t2.DateField IS NULL)

I figured out that the TOE was not operating correctly. This situation was
happening on new DELL 2950 & 1950 Servers with TCP/IP Offloading Engine
enables. After completely disabling this feature, via Microsoft & DELL
hardware the erroneous ODBC error stop occurring.

Q1 After install SP3 on SQL server 2000, some computers can't connect to the SQL server through ODBC. Please help
A1 Consider checking general network connectivity (ping the server from the workstations). If network connectivity is present consider verifying / checking the DSNs in use (verify protocol settings, etc., and test the connection) and / or use the MDAC compatibility checking tool to assess MDAC component status. See: http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm#CCinfo
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...XP/EN-US/cc.exe|||Ping the server OK
Already checked Client Network Utility and Server Network Utility. Both use TCP and NamePipe.
Run MDAC check already.
ODBC still don't work.
ODBC Native State S1T00: timeout expired
I am very new to ODBC connectivity, but i know sql fairly
well:
What can generate a Native State Error: Native State
S1T00: timeout expired on a SQL 2000 database; NT4 OS
Server??
I am running sql database dependent applications on this
server: 3 to be exact.
e.g. I have an application which transports data that was
entered to the SQL database located on this Server via a
LAN user. This application then dynamically takes this
data and transports it to another device located on the
same sub-net as the Server for data recognition and other
functionalities. This is performed in milliseconds hence
it may be utilizing the (winmm.dll) file to accomplish
this. But the error message:
"Warning State: S1T00,Native:0, Origin: [Microsoft][ODBC
SQL Server Driver] timeout expired"
causes this process to fail along with other ODBC and SQL
dependent applictions. also my maintenance plans failed as aresult of this message..
Can someone please help/ inform me what can cause this and
how to prevent this??
Can a modem dial-in access cause this?? though it was
running fine with modem access in the past, and no change
in its configs.??
Thank you in advance

Hello sqlnewbie,
Did the error occur when you connect to SQL server locally? Or did the
issue occur when you connect to SQL server remotely?
If the problem occurs when you connect to SQL server from a client
computer, please try to connect to SQL server from another computer. If the
issue only occurs on one computer, the problem is specially related to the
problematic computer or user.
If the issue occurs on the computer which have SQL server installed, please
check if you can connect to SQL server using SQL Query Analyzer(QA).
I recommend you refer to the steps in the following article to troubleshoot
the issue:

I understand that the issue occurs only when logging on as a particular
